Minimalist interior design for HDB flats and condos, with the storage built in

Minimalist interior design in Singapore is less about owning nothing and more about giving everything a place to go. Best Interior Design plans that storage into the walls of your HDB flat or condo, builds it in our own factory, and keeps the rooms calm with a quiet palette and fewer, better pieces.

Why a Minimalist Home Needs More Storage, Not Less

A minimalist room looks calm because the things you own are hidden, not gone. That takes more storage than a typical flat, built flush into the walls: full-height wardrobes, push-to-open doors with no handles, and a concealed shoe cabinet by the door, so everyday clutter has a closed home within reach.

  • Full-height flush wardrobes that run to the ceiling, leaving no ledge above for dust and boxes to collect.
  • Push-to-open doors and drawers, so the fronts read as one plain surface.
  • A concealed shoe cabinet at the entrance, with room for umbrellas and the bags you grab on the way out.
  • A TV wall with closed storage for the router, cables and remotes.
  • Kitchen drawers rather than open shelves, so the countertop stays clear.

A Calm Palette and Fewer, Better Pieces

Pick three or four colours and materials and repeat them through the flat: a warm white, a light timber-look laminate, one stone or tile, and a soft grey or sand. Then buy fewer, better pieces, such as one good sofa and one dining table, and leave space around them. The room should feel finished, not furnished.

Matte finishes hide fingerprints and water marks better than gloss in a humid flat, and handle-less doors leave nothing to dust around. Timber-look laminate keeps its shape where solid timber would move with the humidity, and sheer curtains soften the strong sun without adding pattern.

Planning the Clutter Zones: Entrance, Service Yard and Shelter

Clutter collects in the same places in most flats: by the front door, in the service yard and in the household shelter. Give the entrance a shoe cabinet and a spot for keys, give the service yard closed laundry storage, and fit the shelter with freestanding shelves, because its walls cannot be hacked or altered.

  • Entrance: a full-height shoe cabinet with a slot for umbrellas and a shallow drawer for keys.
  • Service yard: closed cabinets above the washing machine, and a tall cabinet for the mop, pail and ironing board.
  • Household shelter: freestanding shelves for luggage, festive decorations and bulk buys. Its walls, floor, ceiling and door are never hacked or altered.
  • Hallway: a shallow run of cabinets along a corridor holds more than it looks, as the Punggol flat further down this page shows.

Warm Minimalism for Singapore Homes

Warm minimalism keeps the clean lines and hidden storage but swaps stark white for warm whites, light timber-look laminate, linen and soft lighting. It suits Singapore homes because it feels calm in strong daylight without looking cold in air-conditioned evenings, and its matte, handle-less surfaces are easy to wipe down in humid weather.

If you like more visible timber and softer textiles, our Scandinavian interior design guide is a step warmer, and the interior design styles hub compares every look we design and build.

Hidden Storage From Our Factory, at Dairy Farm and in Punggol

Two carpentry jobs from our factory show the idea at work. At Dairy Farm Residences we built a wardrobe and a platform bed, and in a 3-room HDB flat in Punggol we built hallway storage alongside an L-shaped kitchen, an oven tower and an island. Both are in the carousel below.

  • L-shaped kitchen with grey upper cabinets in a 3-room HDB flat in Punggol

An L-shaped kitchen, a tall oven tower, a kitchen island, and hallway storage built to match.

    Parc Esta loft condo

A TV console that runs to the window, a dining console, a fluted wall behind the bed and lit niches.

  • Riversound Residence lattice display cabinet with glass cases

    Riversound Residence

A lit lattice display wall at the end of the dining area, and a pet house on the balcony.

  • Dairy Farm Residences bedroom with a full-height wardrobe, top-hung cabinet and raised bed platform

    Dairy Farm Residences

A wardrobe that goes all the way up, a cabinet over an open niche, and a raised platform bed.

All four are carpentry jobs built in our factory. See every photo

A platform bed is one of the most useful pieces in a compact minimalist bedroom: the storage under it replaces a chest of drawers, and the room keeps one clean line.

How Much Storage Adds to the Cost

Minimalism looks simple but leans on carpentry, so the length of full-height storage is what moves the price most, along with push-to-open hardware and concealed lighting. Package prices are set by home type, not by style, and your itemised quote lists every wardrobe and cabinet as its own line.

See every package on our renovation packages and prices page, and how storage fits a whole flat in our 4-room BTO design guide.

Your Minimalist Home, Handed Over on a Date in the Contract

Send us your floor plan and a list of what needs a home. Our designer plans the storage in 3D, and once the design is signed off and the site is measured, your handover date goes into the contract. The factory then builds your carpentry while site works run.

If we miss that date, we pay you $5,000, taken off what you still owe at handover, with any balance paid by bank transfer within 7 days. The on-time guarantee sets out what can move the date, such as changes you ask for after confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Storage Does a Minimalist HDB Flat Need?

Usually more than you have now, because everything you own needs a closed home. List what lives in each room, including the bulky items in the shelter and service yard, then plan full-height storage for it before choosing finishes.

Are Push-to-Open Doors Practical?

They work well on wardrobes and TV cabinets, and the latches can be adjusted if a door drifts. For heavy drawers that open all day, such as kitchen drawers, a slim recessed handle is often more practical.

Can I Use the Household Shelter as a Storeroom?

You can store things in it, but its walls, floor, ceiling and door are never hacked or altered. Freestanding shelves keep it organised without fixing anything to the shelter itself.

Will a Minimalist Home Feel Cold?

It can if everything is stark white and hard. Warm whites, light timber-look laminate, linen and warm white lighting keep the calm without the chill, which is the idea behind warm minimalism.

Is Minimalist Interior Design Expensive?

Minimalism costs what its carpentry costs. 2026 cost guides put carpentry at about 28% to 35% of a typical renovation budget, so the quote prices each wardrobe and cabinet separately and you can see what each one adds.

Can You Plan a Minimalist 4-Room BTO Before Key Collection?

Yes. Send us your floor plan and key collection date, and our designer can prepare the layout and a 3D design before you get the keys. The site measurement happens once you have them, and the firm quote follows.
